Ice cream the size of our HEADS! Kaohsiung for the win.
December 22, 2016
It is always a good time when we get to head down to Kaohsiung and spend some time there. The city is thriving with modern buildings, lakes, temples and shopping galore. Helen, Clints friend from his mission, met up with us at the train station and decided to show us around for the day. Our first stop was to head to the Fo Guang Shan Monastery. A little background on this place is, in 1967 Hsing Yun purchased more than 30 hectares in Dashu as the site for the construction of a monastery. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on 16 May 1967. Fo Guang Shan embarked on many construction projects, including university buildings, shrines, and a cemetery. In 1975, Fo Guang Shan's 36-metre tall statue of Amitabha Buddha was consecrated. In 1981, 15 years after its establishment, the Great Hero Hall was built. During these times, many other Fo Guang Shan temples outside the order's mother monastery were also built. We of course enjoyed the huge golden Buddha that sat on top of the hill and the 8 pagodas that surrounded it. .The best part was each pagoda offered different interactive activities to do. We were able to make calligraphy and watch a 3D video on how the Buddhist religion was formed. Now of course it was in Chinese so I didn’t understand anything , but it was animated so that helped! This place had so much to offer and was so beautiful. MUST SEE.
After we were done at the monastery, we headed back down to the city area to get some yummy shaved ice cream. Now Helen asked us what size we wanted to share and we my have gone a little overboard because we got the normal size X3!! It was huge and so YUMMY! We got strawberry flavor with fresh strawberries and cream.
Once we were full and happy, we walked over to the harbor and got to see some pretty boats on the dock. This city is just full of charming places that are picture perfect!
Our next stop was to visit the art district! This place was once a train station and they turned it into a place filled with culture and art. It has an upside down house, train statues, swings, giant art sculptures and restaurants. It was so adorable and just booming with character.
After we had our fill of art, we walked to the night market to see if there was anything we wanted to eat for dinner. Well this night market appealed more towards Chinese tourists and nothing was really edible to me! Lets just say there was a plethora of pig brains, livers, kidneys and testicles… yeah I don’t know if you would eat it too! LOL So Helen took us to a yummy burger house because who doesn’t love a good burger? The food was delicious and made a great ending for a great day! We loved getting to hang out with Helen and my favorite was hearing all of her funny stories from Clint’s mission! It was such a great time!!
Well that is all for today folks! Only a couple more days of Asia posts and I don't know how to feel about it... SAD FACE! But do not worry people, I have a feeling be will be back again in little to no time!
